Future Arbitration Counsel Competition, The “Law Feast”, Was Held on 29th and 30th April 2017

Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC), being active for one a half years gathered law students together for the first time. The competition was hosted in Santral Istanbul Campus of Istanbul Bilgi University and witnessed the excitement of young lawyers from all around of Turkey.

The Competition has been organized by Young ISTAC with the significant support of Zorlu Holding.

230 students of 42 teams from Turkish law faculties endeavored to be the winner. Teams had been submitted their Claimant and Respondent Memorandums months before the oral hearings on 29-30 April 2017, just like an actual arbitration proceeding.

Scholars who are experts in arbitration and lawyers from leading law firms acted as arbitrators in the hearings for 32 teams, on the date of 29th April 2017. The final rounds for the first 8 teams were held on 30th April 2017. The final hearing was between İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University and Galatasaray University.

Att. Kürşat Karacabey (Board Member of Union of Turkish Bars), Prof. Dr. Seldağ Güneş Peschke (Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University) and President of Istanbul Arbitration Centre Prof. Dr. Ziya Akıncı acted as the arbitrators in the final hearing and the first place has been taken by Galatasaray University. Hande Pat from Bilkent Univesity has been awarded as The Future Arbitration Counsel. Young ISTAC Special Award is granted to the team of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.

The President of Istanbul Arbitration Centre, Prof. Dr. Ziya Akıncı described the Competition as a “Law Feast” in his speech at the Award Ceremony. President Akıncı expressed his gratitude towards Istanbul Bilgi University and Zorlu Group in addition to lawyers and scholars who took part in the competition as arbitrators. Also, he strongly emphasized that “This Competition had only winners”.

Legal Director of Zorlu Holding, Att. Özlem Gelbal Uluışık expressed their pleasure to share the excitement of young lawyers by stating that “It is not possible to underestimate the reputation that ISTAC may add to advocacy”.

The finalist teams in “Young ISTAC Future Arbitration Counsel Competition”, which is planned to become a tradition, returned their universities with monetary awards in addition to surprise awards from Zorlu Holding.
